Abe Consumer Finance India - Free Essay Example

Case Summary This case discusses about an issue that have a potential to change the customers perception of a company, which is highly regarded for continuously innovating and valuing its customers. ABE Consumer Finance India On 20th May 2005, it was yet another busy morning for Mr. Kumar, making calls and convincing his customers to buy the personal loan which his company sells. Kumar is a product marketing executive of the ABE Consumer Finance India. His work starts 10 in the morning and can extend even up to 8 in the night. Kumars job involves working under extreme pressure. He sells personal loans for the existing customers of the company. He makes telephone calls to his customers to inform them about the details of the loan that has been offered by his company. He never misses a chance to sell at the slightest intent of the customers interest in the product since the daily target fixed by his manager ranges somewhere between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh rupees. ABE GLOBAL INCORPORATION ABE GLOBAL INCORPORATION was founded by a wealthy American businessman Mr. Jamie Fox during 1950s in America. Initially, the company manufactured electrical goods. During 1960s, it diversified into manufacturing electronic household consumer durables. Subsequently, the company flourished during the following years. It was regarded as one of the prestigious institutions in America. Soon ABE GLOBAL INC., amassed huge profits under the able leadership of Mr. Jamie Fox. ABE GLOBAL INC., found new growth opportunities in foreign lands too. So it started its operations in the European, Asian, and Australian countries and presently its operations spreads around 80 countries. ABE GLOBAL INC., has shown a profit after tax of $8 billion registering a compounded annual growth rate of over 40% for the past 10 years. (See EXIHIBIT 1 for the country wise breakup of profit). Keeping its philosophy of satisfying the household needs of the general public, ABE came out with an innovative idea of financing its products. To achieve this, ABE floated a special subsidiary called ABE CONSUMER FINANCE LTD. This has led more and more people belonging to the middle and lower income group buying ABE GLOBALs products. This has helped ABE to a greater extent in maintaining the growth rate and thereby reaching out to the local masses in different countries. The tradition of constant innovation and delivery of values to the customers was maintained by all the CEOs who followed Mr. Fox for the past 57 years. Presently, ABE GLOBAL is headed by Mr. Alex Mathews. Mr. Mathews took over the reigns of the company in 2005. Mr. Mathews is one of youngest CEO and has received the BEST CEO AWARD for the year 2006. ABE CONSUMER FINANCE INDIA ABE Consumer Finance India Ltd., is the wholly owned subsidiary of ABE GLOBAL INCORPORATION in the Indian subcontinent. It sells loan products targeting the middle income group to satisfy their buying needs of household consumer durables. It found the path to the Indian market when the flood gates were opened post globalization. It is almost 10 years now since ABE started its operations and still finds the Indian market very lucrative. The Indian arm shows an annual revenue of over two billion dollars which is over 20% of its global sales (See EXHIBIT 2 for Indian sales figure). Presently, the Indian operation is headed by Mr. Henry Smith. Smith is an MBA from Harvard University. Smith is a highly ambitious person. He is young, energetic, and an active CEO whom ABE has ever found in its history. He personally designs all the new and innovative financial schemes for ABE. Keeping with the high expectations of his employer, Smith has brought out a new financial product for the mark et. At this time, he is targeting the existing customers of his company. THE PRODUCT Smiths new product is exclusively based on the trust the company has on its existing customers. It mainly takes into account the good payment records for the loans which they had previously availed. Based on the risk rate, the company fixes the interest rate for the product. The interest rate ranges from 1.25 percent to 2.33 percent on a monthly basis. The loan has a fixed tenor which means once a loan has been availed, it should be paid back in fixed equated monthly installments (EMI). The tenor period usually ranges from a minimum of 12 months to a maximum of 36 months. The repayment period is usually decided when the customer avails the loan and it adds more flexibility in terms of repayment. The EMI has an insurance component and the loan has one time processing charge attached to it which means the customer has to bear the costs of insurance and processing charge. The insurance amount is paid with the EMI whereas the process charge of 3.5 percent for availing the loan is deduc ted from the actual loan amount. (See EXIHIBIT 3 for a model of loan details chart) THE BUSINESS MODEL Smith has designed an exclusive ad campaign to attract the customers. With the help of the companys database about its customers, the problem of reaching the customers has been eased. The company forwards a personal mailer to each and every customer informing them about the loan. The work doesnt stop there. The company employs exclusive marketing personnel to sell the loan. A typical marketing executive would make telephone calls to the customers reminding them about the mailer and giving further information about the loan. Thereby, ABE keeps itself in constant touch with the customers. This proves to be an efficient strategy for ABE which is evident from the sales figures for the year 2006. Once the customer evinces interest in the product, he is asked to visit the ABE office. At ABE office, the customer is verified for authenticity and asked to complete a set of formalities. Once he is cleared for approval, the loan is sanctioned to him in two days time. This is one of the cor e competence of ABE wherein the acquisition of a customer is done in a matter of days. THE DILEMMA Today, Mr. Kumar, our marketing executive, is facing a tight corner situation which he has never experienced. A customer, who has completed all the formalities for getting a loan like submitting the cheques, necessary proofs and securities, is unwilling to accept the loan sanctioned to him. Kumar is very upset considering the effort he put in to convince him. The bone of contention is that the customer is not satisfied about paying a processing charge of 3.5 percent for the loan amount. Kumar has tried his level best in trying to convince his customer but all in vain. The customer was very particular that he was unaware of the high processing charge. When Kumar brought this information to the notice of his manager, he was called in for a review of the situation to find out what went wrong. Together they found out that while briefing about the details of the loan to the customer, Kumar did not give much importance to the processing charge. As a result, the customer was kept in da rk about the processing charge rate and the costs associated with it. At the outset, Kumar and his manager were worried about whether they would able to retain the customer, the implications of this particular incident on the company, and the image of the company. Moreover, both the parties stand to lose their valuable time and the cost spent in the whole process. My Writing For Class Thinking - 954 Words

I first signed up for the class thinking it would be an easy way to go ahead and get the English requirement done with for my degree audit. However, I found that this class was more than just a requirement. It brought light to what being a good writer was and how to produce good writing. At the beginning of the semester, I assumed that this was going to be similar to other English classes that I have taken in the past. I thought we would be writing using textbook formats or ways that I had been taught in the past. I thought that the professor would have the same outlook on the course and how assignments should be completed, compared to other English courses. I was wrong. Segmentation and Targeting for DSO Segment

Question: Discuss about the Segmentation and Targeting for DSO Segment. Answer: Introduction Marketing of the products and services are the soul of the economy in the society. All the organizations therefore perform its basic functions to satisfy their primary stakeholders, the consumers and the owners. The organizations create utility when the inputs and the components transform into the finished products. Marketing provides significant inputs to the specified consumers preferences, but the production has the ultimate responsibility of creating the utility in the market (Scott 2015). This report will target to evaluate the marketing and segmentation of The Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) as the marketing team plays a significant role in the annual revenue generation and is also responsible for the promotion of events and the selling of tickets. Not only that, the marketing team is also responsible for the sponsorship generation and fund raising. Segmentation and targeting The DSO is one of the famous orchestra in Australia founded by Martin Jarvis. The aim of the segmentation and targeting of the market process is to develop the sales and marketing in a more effectual way. Both of these can be done with the development of a better understanding of the consumer base and the potential prospects, also communicating with the target market with the right message, at the right time (Goeldner 2016). All of these need to be done in a cost effective way. The segmentation of the marketing is required to create different groups with the same profile so that targeting those could be easier to communicate with the chose one in future. This segmentation generally remains the same whether a B2B or a B2C market is being operated. However there are few critical factors that need to be taken care of. The B2B business is the one that sells to the other businesses and a B2C business sells directly to the consumers. However, both the businesses exist in the market and it is gradually being more common for the single businesses. Therefore the DSO needs to divide its consumer base into different segments so that they can segregate them for the B2b and B2C purposes. Segment Evaluation The market segmentation is necessary for every business. It is a procedure that helps the organization to divide the target business market that is a combination the potential and existing consumers into segments on the basis of similar characteristics. While dividing the target market, the scholars try to find common traits such as common interests, needs, similar lifestyles or similar demographic needs. The primary aim of market segmentation is to recognize the high yield sections which basically are the segments that tend to be the most profitable one to have the potential to develop (Marshall 2014). There are different methods to section the market. The business to business or the B2B suppliers may segment it into diverse types of countries or businesses. However, when it comes to the Business to consumer suppliers may divide the market into lifestyle segments, behavioral segments, demographic segments and other significant segments. The market segments presume that dissimilar ma rket segments require dissimilar marketing plans such as different prices, offers, distribution and promotional strategies or other marketing variables. The segmentation is not only designed for the identification of the beneficial segments but also developing the key segments to understand the requirements of specific segments and their motivations to purchase. The segmentation evaluation is basically used for supporting the development of the market strategy and the planning. This analysis is also seen as the STP approach which stands for Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning for providing the framework of the objectives of the market plan. Therefore, when a market is segmented, the services and the products are placed in a way that syncs with the specified target market. There are several methods for segmenting the market; however the most important one is the selection of the base. In this process the analysts find out the procedure that can reduces the differences between the members of a same segment and increases the difference between different segments. The segmentation base can be different such as demographic, geographic, geo-demographic, psychographics and behavioral. The geographic segmentation segments the market according to the geographic criteria; the demographic depends on the different variables such as socio economic status, age, family size etc, the psychographic segmentation is generally measured by different interests, activities and opinions of the consumers, and behavioral segmentation divides the consumers on the basis of their observed behaviors (James and Rose-Ackerman 2013). The Darwin Symphony Orchestra has reached the target audience throughout each corner of the country. The organization not only performs in its base territory Darwin, it also a travelling history and visited Alice Springs, the Devils Marbles and Simpsons Gap in Central Australia, Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula, Pine Creek, Katherine, Yirrkala, Milingimbi and Maningrida, and Kununurra in Western Australia (Dso.org.au. 2017). The audience of the organization is mostly the intellectual section of the society who has a profound taste of music. As the organization performs in both the individual and corporate shows, they have a number of packages that fulfill the requirements of the clients. However most of the clients of the organization are the B2C customers who book tickets or shows directly for the orchestra shows. However the company invites both the corporate and individual chair endowment in their show. Therefore the orchestra invites the supports who can endow a certain position in their show for certain amount of money as the sponsorship. Therefore the orchestra will promote their business throughout the year or the amount of time the contract has been done. The company different such B2B consumers who have booked the individual chair endowment, 250 Club membership, the DSO bequest and gifting opportunities, the payroll contributions done by several companies, and other instrument sponsors. These partnering opportunities are not only individual partnerships but DSO also has corporate partnerships. In their corporate partnerships there are options of getting the principal player chair endowment that are credited to all their concerts and their official website. There are such other programs like educational program supports that can be designed for providing the students to engage them with their favorite musical instruments, The DSO gift Tix that creates the opportunities of partnership between the corporate compan ies and the organizations, the other plans that enhances the chances of corporate partnership opportunities or the B2B customers of the non-profit organizations (Dso.org.au. 2017). The market segmentation of The Darwin Symphony Orchestra can also be understood with a careful analysis of their macro and micro environmental factors. From the following PEST analysis the business environment of the organization can be understood: The political factor always influences any cultural production. There are several political factors that have a huge impact on the organization and business management of the organization while influencing the cultural, arts and the creative industries (Trimarchi 2016). There are general cultural strategies and methods such as the labor law, taxation policy, and other political situation in Australia that are supposed to provide the stability factor for the business environment of the DSO. In this case the political environment is quite stable; therefore it does not have influence the business environment in a negative way. The economical factor is the most significant one to influence the cultural sector. Australia is one of the largest capitalist economies in the world and it is also one of the significant countries with the cultural values. It has also been noticed that the cultural development and the progress of the country has been directly proportioned in the historical development as well. The socio cultural factor has a huge impact on the business environment of the DSO. The socio cultural environment of Australia is quite open-minded and it helps a lot in the development of the organization (Trimarchi 2016). The value the art and culture, therefore the DSO has performed almost all over the country. The technological advancements have enhanced the business of The Darwin Symphony Orchestra as it has made their performance and businesses more exotic. An orchestra performance requires a lot of technical equipments for the sound and light arrangements on the stage, therefore the technological advancements have more positive impacts on their performance (Trimarchi 2016). Business to Consumer Target The orchestra marketing has a different language of it altogether. For the business to consumer market is where the business directly makes transaction with the consumers. For the business to consumer target The Darwin Symphony Orchestra should integrate the orchestra marketing with the consumer marketing in a unified way of the market segments. This is where the marketer of the orchestra should select the target market segments and allocate the resources to the marketing tasks. The orchestra has several segments of consumers, however the most important ones are the first time ticket buyers who are about get the musical experiences for the first time. However there are several other consumers who have subscribed to the organization over the years; the consumers, who have purchased tickets for few selected shows, the ones who have purchased tickets for a single show (Atherton 2014). Therefore the marker of the business to consumer should have different marketing plans for all of the s egments. However, the very first thing that the marketer need is to know its audience. After having a clear understanding about the consumers of the orchestra the marketer should have a clear perspective of the purchasing behavior of the consumers. The organization needs to analyze the buying behaviors before fixing the marketing strategy as the concept of marketing puts significance on creating the marketing mix of the company that will satisfy the consumers, therefore it will be easier to understand what, when, how and where the consumer wants the specific service or the product. In this case The Darwin Symphony Orchestra should plan a more effective marketing plan for the new consumers. In addition to that while creating the marketing plan, it is necessary for the marketer to put him or herself in the shoes of the audience and understand the needs and wants of the audience. If the organization is targeting the new consumers or the first time buyers they should work with the four Ps of the marketing mix and focus more on the benefits of music for the audience, not on the features of their music. Business to Business Target The segmentation of consumers is not a new business practice but the skill and techniques have evolved with the course of time. However the business to business targets do not really face the same rush of the consumer data like the business to consumer segments do. However, the segmenting the consumers into such groups provides the marketer the opportunity to generate an additional value for their target consumers. The business to business consumers for The Darwin Symphony Orchestra are the sponsors and the collaborators who have invested money in the orchestra. This segment should get more importance as the sponsors are the financial providers of the organization. In this scenario, the partnership between both the companies should develop in a steady manner so that it can lead to increase more audiences for the show and more involvement from other partners. The sponsors should also be segmented in different segments (Atherton 2014). The Darwin Symphony Orchestra already has segmente d its sponsors as individual and corporate collaborators, but for more clear understanding the target market should be divided on the basis of money they have invested. In this way, it will be easier for the organization of differentiate and create different marketing strategy for each segment. In this plan the marketers will target the corporate collaborators more; therefore there should be clear segmentation of the target market depending on the marketing mix of the marketplace. There are several global companies which would like to pair with The Darwin Symphony Orchestra for engaging in different communities around Australia. The marketers should develop a strategic plan especially for this segment of the market. Positioning and Customer Behavior In order to have an efficient and effective business, the segmentation targeting positioning or the STP is a necessity. The segmentation of the market is the grouping of the consumers into different segments which have certain common requirements or are expected to respond in a similar way to a marketing action plan. The segmentation can be done in numerous ways. The most considered factors in the segmentation are the demographics, psychographics, behaviors, and the geographic locations. After the segmentation process is done the marketer needs to do the targeting which involves choosing the target. As the market is already segmented in different sections, therefore it is necessary to develop particular strategies for the target market. Lastly, the positioning is significant as it involves the development of the service and the brand image in the consumers (Berkovi 2016). It can also involve the improvement of the perception of the consumers about their previous experience with the b rand. An effective positioning of the market will include a clear understanding of the competing brands. It also requires recognizing the differential advantages which will help in delivering the potential benefits to the target market against all the competition. Conclusion In conclusion it can be said that The Darwin Symphony Orchestra needs a clear understanding of all the segments of the target market prior to make the marketing plan. Once the organization decides on the target market, they can have a clear perspective of the different marketing strategy that they will create for the future. This study has concluded that The Darwin Symphony Orchestra will be concentrating on the first time consumers and the corporate collaborators, therefore the marketing strategy should be developed accordingly. Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies Analysis free essay sample

danskeLaura Valentiner-Bohse ‘An exploration of friendship in Lord of the Flies and of Mice and Men’ In both Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck evident components of friendship are persuaded throughout the storyline, particularly in Lennie and George’s friendship in Of Mice and Men and Ralph and Piggy’s friendship in Lord of the Flies. In both books the authors focus on the natural dependence human beings have on each other. Of particular importance is the bond the characters share being outsiders, the dependence they have on one another, the respect they share, the theme of survival, the sacrifice that comes with love and the contrast in their personalities. The two books show the unique significance of the strong bond the characters share of being the outcasts. In Lord of the Flies when the boys led by the malicious character Jack turn on Ralph and Piggy ultimately leaving the two to stand together lost. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies Analysis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This strengthens an already growing companionship between the boys to the readers, as they have no other choice than to work together. Likewise, in of Mice and Men George reminds Lennie that it is just the two of them, up against the world when saying ‘Guys like us, that work in ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family†¦ With us it ain’t like that’. The word ‘us’ gives readers the sense of unity between the two and when referring to ‘they’ he differentiates between the other guys and the two of them thus creating a special bond between the two of them. Another great factor of friendship within the two books is the dependence they have on each other; of course this dependence varies from each character in each book. In Lord of the Flies it is obvious from the moment that Piggy meets Ralph he recognizes his leadership skills and so he clings on to Ralph by frantically following him in the opening scene, ‘the fat boy hung steadily at his shoulder’ in hope of surviving on the island and his desperation increases when jack start to attack him. Although it seems that Ralph doesn’t feel the same desperation as Piggy, there is still a moment when Ralph thinks, ‘what was the sensible thing to do? There was no Piggy to talk sense’ from this section the readers can assume that Ralph always depended on Piggy’s knowledge being just as great a skill as leadership. Piggy plays a big part in Ralph’s decision-making throughout the novel. The friendship at first developed through Piggy’s reliance on Ralph. But as the group falls apart their friendship becomes unbreakable. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie depends on George greatly and can simply not survive on his own and needs George, which George pinpoints when saying ‘Jesus Christ somebody would shoot you for a coyote if you were by yourself’. When George refers to Lennie as a ‘coyote’ it exemplifies his limited human instinct, which triggers the readers to view Lennie as an incompetent character. Lennie also lacks a general memory and sense which he shows ‘George†¦ I ain’t got [my bus ticket]. I musta lost it. ’ Lennie doesn’t regard his mental weakness as a point of despair as he entirely relies on George which reveals his childish nature. Another aspect in these books is the role of respect. In both books respect plays a significant role in the society that the characters live in and it seems that in each friendship there’s always one character that has the upper hand and for that reason gains more respect than the other. Through Lord of the flies Piggy shows respect for Ralph consistently by trying to prove his qualities for and example he is pleased that Ralph pays attention to him even though it’s not in the way that he would want, ‘Piggy grinned reluctantly pleased despite himself at even this much recognition’ as he respects Ralph and wants the feeling to become mutual but closer to the end Ralph begins to return that respect as it is shown in an assembly he gathered, ‘Piggy, for all his ludicrous body, had brains. Ralph was a specialist in thought now, and could recognize thought in another’ this connotes Ralph’s newfound respect and suggest that he sees Piggy as an equal and is adopting his way of thinking. In Of Mice and Men the respect is more one-sided as Lennie psychologically is not up to George’s level of thinking therefore resulting in George having to take care of Lennie. ‘Lennie, who had been watching, imitated George exactly. He pushed himself back, drew up his knees, embraced them, looked over to George to see whether he had it just right’. The fact that Lennie does this mimicry when it is just George and himself shows that he truly admires George. At the same time George is aware of Lennie’s physical capabilities and he states that Lennie is ‘strong as a bull’ Lennie physically has the capability to do hard labour, which benefits George when travelling from job to job thus gives him so level of respect for Lennie. Throughout the two books different and varying kinds of love are shown between the characters and with love comes sacrifice. In both books readers observe the characters take great measures for their companion these acts being genuine and selfless as they can be. In Lord of the Flies although Ralph’s behaviour towards Piggy may be perceived as being quite blunt, Ralph proves his sincere respect and love for piggy when he marches over to Jack and demands Piggy’s glasses back. This shows that Ralph is willing to put himself in danger in order to get his friends glasses back, which is an act of kindness and of love. In of Mice and Men George and Lennie demonstrates a profound love for each other in the face of society as it is made evident to the readers that usually workers travel alone. George makes the ultimate sacrifice ‘The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger†¦ George shivered and looked at the gun, and then he threw it from him’ George kills Lennie out of kindness because he knows the consequences of killing Curley’s wife for Lennie would be being lynched. George threw the gun away distraught by his action, making the readers aware this was not an easy decision and for that reason it was out of love George decided to kill Lennie. Lastly an interesting component of these friendships are the complete contrast between the characters, as opposites attracts. Both relationships physically and psychologically differentiate from each other. In Lord of the flies Ralph and Piggy personalities instantly contrasted one another in the beginning of the book. Piggy seems clumsy by the looks of his awkwardly proportioned body. Ralph on the other hand is representing a conventional image of a boy his age. The opening description of Piggy is ‘He was shorter than the fair boy and very fat. He came forward, searching out safe lodgments for his feet’ this instantly draws a distinction between the two as Ralph is described as refined whereas Piggy is illustrated as gawky when he’s looking for where to step and is rejected by the others when he offers his help Jack replies ‘we don’t want you’ Jack looks down on Piggy and as a leader he influences the others to do so too. The opening scene in Of Mice and Men establishes the obvious physically differences when ‘the first man was small†¦ Every part of him was defined†¦ Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, and wide, sloping shoulders’ these descriptions vividly describes to the readers George and Lennie’s appearances and certain choices of words allow the readers associates this with a personality as George is ‘defined’ indicating he is the opposite of his companion. As Lennie is big built and so readers assume he is the physically stronger but ‘sloping shoulders’ identify he is childish with his sloppy and careless nature but also reveals the simplicity in his personality. In conclusion I believe that many factors have resulted in the characters from Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies to gain such a significantly strong friendship. But one of the biggest components that I regard to be the most remarkable is the nature of humans in which they survive together in pairs. Both relationships depended greatly on each other through the novel because being alone they simply would not have been psychologically strong enough by themselves. Both friendships depend on each other in different ways but evidently rely on each other significantly as I have explored in various ways.

Collective Nouns in Spanish

Collective Nouns in Spanish See in this selection how a singular noun can refer to a group of more than one person. (The bracketed description of Rousseff was added to the original for clarity here.) Source: ABC.es, a Madrid-based news site. Retrieved July 23, 2013. Suggested translation: Pope Francis made clear that his first goal was to be with the people. And so it was. The vehicle that transported the Holy Father and [Brazilian President Dilma] Rousseff from the airport toward the city proceeded while enveloped by a crowd of people who got near in order to see the pope of the poor from nearby without security barriers to separate them. Key grammatical issue: This selection shows how collective nouns - pueblo, multitud and gente - are singular in form even though they sometimes are translated as plurals. Although both pueblo and gente are translated here as people, note how in Spanish they are singular words. Pueblo is used with the singular definite article el, and the singular verbs se acercaba (from the reflexive verb acercarse) and separase (a subjunctive form of separar) go with multitud de gente. We do the same thing in English - the most common translations for multitud, crowd and multitude, are singular even though they refer to multiple people. If pueblo and gente seem confusing, its only because they arent translated here as singular terms (although in a different context pueblo could refer to a small town). Other notes on vocabulary and grammar: Personal titles in Spanish - such as doctora in la doctora Snchez (Dr. Snchez) and seà ±or in el seà ±or Robles (Mr. Robles) - are not capitalized, and it would have been acceptable here to write el papa Francisco instead of el Papa Francisco. However, it is not unusual to capitalize the titles of certain people, Catholic popes among them, out of respect. When talking about people using their titles, the definite article (such as el in el Papa Francisco or la in la doctora Snchez) is used. If you were speaking to these people using their titles, however, you would not use the article. Dejar claro is an idiom meaning to make clear. Dejar en claro means the same thing and is more frequently used. Primer is the  apocopated form of primero. Llevar is a common verb typically meaning to carry.Note the double use of the personal a after llevaba. It is used here both before Santo Padre (al  is the combined form meaning a plus el) and before Rousseff. The personal a is also used befor e the phrase in angular quotes. The preposition desde often suggests motion from a place, in this case the airport. Motion toward is indicated by hacia. While was used in the translation for clarity. There is no equivalent word used here in the original Spanish. Arropado is the past participle of arropar, which typically means to wrap. However, it would be usual in English to say that someone was wrapped by a crowd. But the image the verb conveys is one of being closely surrounded, and enveloped seemed to work fine, although other phrases might have been used as well. Acercar usually means to bring nearer. In the reflexive form, as here, it usually means to approach or to get nearer. Tratar is a common verb often meaning to try. Angular quotation marks are used in the same way as standard double quotation marks. They are more common in publications from Spain than those from Latin America. Note how the comma after pobres is placed outside the quote marks rather than inside as it would be in American English. Valla is a word for fence. The term vallas de seguridad usually refers to small, metallic, portable fencelike structures that are used to control crowds and keep people in orderly lines.

Volver, A Separation, The White Ribbon, Tsotsi, Departures, Animal Essay

Volver, A Separation, The White Ribbon, Tsotsi, Departures, Animal Kingdom and The Secret in their Eyes - Essay Example This study highlights that although South Africa’s Johannesburg is more urbane than any other city in Africa, yet the featuring of the neighboring sprawling and (in)famous Soweto slum makes the plot of the movie more plausible. Another instance which reinstates this sense of authenticity is the presentation of large construction pipes which serve as Tsotsi and his gang’s domicile. Otherwise, it would be out of order to speak of Tsotsi’s crime as taking place within Johannesburg. This paper declares that the author also uses special effect filmmaking strategies to make the setting very plausible and congruent with the plot. Specifically, lightning techniques have been used to this effect. In instances where Tsotsi and his gang carry night raids, weak light is used, thereby making the audience believe that such criminal undertakings are nocturnal. Through the use of silhouettes, Tsotsi and his protà ©gà ©s are also densely shadowed, so that they are easily identified as malefactors. The failure to use proper lighting could have portrayed Tsotsi’s criminal exploits as taking place during daytime, and thereby painting Johannesburg as an insecure, crime-riddled city where crimes happen even during broad daylight. Lance Gewer and Gavin Hood as the director and cinematographer respectively showcase their dexterity and ingenuity in filmmaking by making the movie polyglot. The movie consists of languages such as English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa and isiZulu, and thereby rightly painting Johannesburg not only as a polyglot but also a cultural melting pot.

Critical analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Critical analysis - Essay Example At the end of the story, we find two stances being provided to the presence of the girls in the store. Ironically, both Lengel and Sammy have been looking at the girls with the same male stare, but end up performing very different actions as a result. While Sammy stands up for the girls' rights, the manager falls back on a conventional disapproval of their attire and embarrasses them for it. In Faulkner's short story, the crime is not rape - in fact, Minnie's friends even wonder if she was actually raped at all. The crime is that the men believe that a black man dared to rape a white woman. While the men punish him by killing him, the women are seen as gossipy and wanting to know details about the rape rather than trying to provide their friend with comfort. Point of view may be used as a thematic device when the author or narrator of a short story seems more concerned with presenting a perspective on the themes of the text, rather than telling a story or drawing attention to conventional aspects of character or plot. Virginia Woolf revolutionized the technique of presenting points of view with her use of stream of consciousness and the interior monologue. In "Kew Gardens" the point of view is that of the flower bed, while the bed and the insects and other features in it are presented in sharp focus, we only see a 'slice' of the lives of the people who are walking by. The first couple's passing by shows that they are estranged from each other - he is walking several steps away from her. Even the traumatic memory of losing his first love is a fragmented one, as it is revealed that he can remember insignificant things about it much more distinctly than he can - or wants to - recall the event itself, where his girlfriend turned down his proposal of marriage. His wife and children and his whole life seem insignificant in comparison to the small, trivial details magnified in the story. Russell Smith's short story uses point of view to juxtapose what people are and what they want to be. His protagonist finds life in the urban world oppressive, and the narrative point of view seems sardonic about life in such metropolitan centers as Toronto, where superficiality is the norm and true meaning is often forgotten. #3. Discuss irony as a strategic element in the story "The Age of Lead" by Margaret Atwood and the story "The Gospel according to Mark" by Jorge Luis Borges. In Atwood's "The Age of Lead'' the irony seems to be that two people who did not want finality in their lives end up with nothing but death and a 'frozen' existence. The body of the dead sailor that is frozen and being talked about non television is a strong metaphor for the lives that the narrator and Vincent have been living. Of particular significance seems the fact that the sailor has been dead for long, but that his body is perfectly preserved since he died in the Arctic. The body exemplifies a dead existence where one remains stagnant and may as well be dead. Vincent dies of an unnamed disease at a relatively young age, signifying that

Chinas Rise Essays -- Chinese History, Mao

China’s last dynasty ended one hundred years ago, and the last great dynasty ended one thousand years ago. (Dharmananda)Nonetheless, China is rising out of the ashes in modern times. China became a communist nation in nineteen hundred and forty nine. (Woods, 2009) With the help of the U.S.S.R., China made multiple nuclear weapons in the nineteen fifties. This sparked the start of China’s military modernization and their reemergence to the international community. China’s international policy is to promote world peace. They hope to do so by staying neutral and only defending their interests, and not instigating. The only contradiction in China’s policy is that it interferes with Tibet and Taiwan. If Taiwan ever tries declaring independence, China will declare war on them and it just so happens the United States is an ally of Taiwan. The global superpower of today is the United States of America. (Vale, 2010) The United States has the strongest military for ce in the world, with the most funding of any country by billions of dollars. The United States is also China’s number one trading partner, so if China were to oppose the United States, China’s economy would crumble. China’s rise is not a threat to global security. Pre-communist China was a nation in turmoil. In the nineteen forties the country was in a civil war, between the Nationalist’s and Communist’s. China’s economy was in shambles. The weapons that the Communist’s used were primarily from the U.S.S.R. and the Nationalist’s used weapons from the U.S.A. (Global Security, 2005) When the Communist’s won the war, the U.S.S.R. continued to support the Communist regime of China. In the nineteen fifties China began their nuclear weapons program, building multiple nuclear bombs... ...ates they would lose their number one trading partner by almost $70 billion dollars. (Prasad & Gu, 2009)The loss of the United States would devastate the Chinese economy. China at this point in time isn’t ready to oppose the United States. China’s rise is not a threat to global security. They promote peace and international development. Their international policy is not a threat to global security. The only issue they have is if Taiwan ever declares independence. If China declares war on Taiwan then the United States would declare war on China. Global security relies on the United States for their military force. If China were to oppose the United States they would lose. Since China depends on United States for trade they wouldn’t go to war against them. Global security is not threatened by China’s rise because China and the United States depend on each other.

Analysis of Setting in Young Goodman Brown Essays - 877 Words

An analysis of the setting in Nathaniel Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown In the story of Young Goodman Brown setting plays an important role. It provides symbolism to certain events and provokes emotions amongst the characters, especially those of Goodman Brown. The story of Young Goodman Brown is that of a man on an adventure to feed his curiosity and to visit the dark side of his Puritan town. Once he arrives at the destination of his adventure, he realizes that many of his elders have followed in the paths of evil and that holiness and innocence has been vanquished from his once thought to be holy Puritan town. The central idea of Young Goodman Brown, is the conflict in Goodman Brown between joining the devil and remaining†¦show more content†¦The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, is letting the readers know that something horrible is about to happen to Goodman Brown. As Brown starts on his adventure he recalls that his wife, Faith, had dreams of this particular adventure, dreams that warned him not to go; this feeling of uncertainty sparks a feeling of anxiety in Brown as he continues walking through the forest and on with his journey. As he walks on, the scenery around him begins to change, He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind. (310). This quote describes the dark and gloomy surroundings that Brown is walking through on his journey, it also creates the mood of fear and hesitance as he continues on his way. Then as Brown is walking along he comes to encounter a man dressed in grave and decent attire. The man states You are late, Goodman Brown, and Brown replies by saying, Faith kept me back awhile. (310) In literal terms he is speaking of his wife, but metaphorically he could be speaking of his faith in god and ho w it almost kept him from embarking on his journey. Hawthorne creates many metaphors in his story of Young Goodman Brown. Later on in Browns journey he meets a man with a cane that resembles a snake, the serpent is a symbol of evil, and then when Brown protests against the devil, With heaven above, and Faith below, I will yet stand firmShow MoreRelatedFiction Essay - Young Goodman Brown and the Lottery1051 Words   |  5 PagesFICTION ESSAY WRITING STYLE USED: APA OUTLINE I.
